Week 8 assignments

During these last two weeks we will be creating a magazine with a cover and several pages of the magazine.  This will help to cover several of the skills you learned during the study of the graphics program.

Magazine Cover

Assignment

Create a mock magazine cover that will reflect you and your (appropriate for school) interests.  The cover should meet the following criteria—

  • A name (How about your first name in the style of Rosie or Oprah magazines.)
  • Several layers of pictures reflecting you and your interests.  They may be photos or pulled off the Internet.
  • Vary the opacity of your pictures so that some of them will be more important and obvious than others. Your most important picture should be the largest and clearest picture.
  • Have at least 5 headlines that will draw people into the magazine.
  • Have the date.
  • Include the cost.
  • Include the barcode for selling the magazine.
  • The cover should be 81/2 by 11”.

Be sure that the lettering is all easily readable and stands out from the background.

Check all the spelling.

Use extra graphics to enhance the work and not to just be there for no reason.

Make sure that the work is appealing in a very rapid walk-by of a person just glancing at the pictures.

The work will be worth 300 points—

100 for the workmanship

100 for the idea and creativity of your work.

100 for the overall appearance of the work.

Save two versions in your Photoshop file—

Magazine—working

Magazine--flattened

  • There should be pictures with multiple layers.  One picture should be larger and smaller pictures should be of sizes that minimize their importance.

There should be a title for the magazine—probably in the upper left corner.

A UPC symbol is a nice touch.

There should be a date, volume and number.

There should also be titles for articles that can be found in the magazine.

The pictures may combine pictures with different places, etc. and should reflect your creativity.

    Appropriateness is important.

Lettering should have a variety of styles but must be readable.  Be especially careful to check your colors for contrast to make sure that you are able to read all the letters in your article.  It may be necessary to place a different color behind your lettering.
